Welcome to Archuleta County!

Whether you enjoy hiking, climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ATV’ing, water skiing, boating, fishing, camping or hunting, year–round recreational opportunities are bountiful in Archuleta County.

Archuleta County is the gateway to 2.8 million acres of wilderness and national forest areas, including the San Juan National Forest, Weminuche Wilderness Area and the South San Juan Wilderness Area. The San Juan Mountains in particular are famous for their deep snows and the Wolf Creek Ski Area, which averages over 460 inches of snow a year. The light powder that often falls in December and January attracts skiers and snowboarders from around the world. Summer is filled with opportunities to hike or bike into the wilderness and set your eyes on beautiful scenic panoramas from high alpine mountains to sandstone river canyons and high desert vistas. Summer is also a great time to visit the Chimney Rock National Monument and Navajo State Park, where you can relax in the waters of the 15,000 acre Navajo Reservoir.

You can enjoy the Pagosa Geothermal Hot Springs year-round, the largest and hottest natural mineral outflow in the world, located in downtown Pagosa Springs. Whether you suffer serious ailments, sore muscles or just wish to relax, weary travelers can now choose between three downtown bathing facilities that offer either indoor or outdoor pools, or both.

In addition to the variety of outdoor activities, visitors and residents alike can peruse charming shops, art galleries, and historic sites, go to a movie, a play or a concert or attend one of the numerous year-round Events held in Archuleta County.
