The mission of the Building Department is the protection of life, health, property, and public welfare through effective administration and enforcement of the building codes. In accomplishing this mission, we strive to maintain the highest levels of fairness, professionalism, and ethical conduct toward the citizens of Archuleta County whom we serve.

What is the minimum square footage that I can build without a permit?
One-story detached storage buildings up to 200 square feet can be built without a permit. Adding to any existing building needs a permit.
Can I do a remodel without a permit?
You can do interior remodeling without a permit if there are no structural changes to the building. Adding or taking out walls or changing window sizes are structural change. Windows size changes in bedrooms need to be checked for emergency accessibility. Please contact the department at 970-731-3877.
Can I reroof or reside my home without a permit?
Yes, however, if your discover structural damage contact our office at 970-731-3877 before you proceed with any repairs.
