Division Functions
Commissioners are elected at large from one of three geographic districts for four-year staggered terms. As the governing body of the county, the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) establishes the vision and sets the direction for county government to plan for the future challenges that face our community.
Archuleta County’s three-member Board of County Commissioners has a responsibility to provide leadership to county operations through the adoption of the annual budget, which includes all departments, commissions, and other spending agencies funded by county appropriations, including law enforcement and human services.
Duties
Other powers, authorities, and responsibilities of the Board of County Commissioners include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Levy taxes, subject to state tax revenue limitations
- Enter into contracts and receive grants and gifts
- Approve intergovernmental agreements, resolutions, and ordinances
- Accurate and timely reporting to state and federal agencies as required
- Make appointments to various community boards and commissions
- Care for county property, including the acquisition and disposal of county property
- Act as the Board of Equalization
- Liquor licensing
- Road and bridge construction, maintenance, and repair
- Adoption of subdivision regulations
- Weed control
Commissioner Meetings
Work Sessions are meetings were the Commissioners can come together and discuss any topic or for staff to inform the board of any items that may be of interest and future consideration of the Board. No decisions are made at Work Sessions. All documents and items discussed are Work Product.

Work Sessions are held every Tuesday at 8:30 AM (except the 5th Tuesday of the month).
Regular Board of County Commissioners Meetings are held every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Meetings are open to the public.
How can I get a copy of the meeting that was recorded?
You need to contact the county clerk at (970) 264-8350 for a CD copy. The fee is $25 per CD.
Would I be allowed to ask the board a question at any meeting?
The board allows questions and comments to be made prior to and at the end of each meeting. These must be questions and comments that pertain to something other than a posted agenda item. Public comments will be allowed for each agenda item.
